This Wylex MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is a dedicated protection device designed to safeguard your cables and appliances from damage. This MCB’s main job is to prevent electrical fires by cutting power if the circuit gets too hot or shorts out.
Breakdown of the Technical Specs:
- 20A (Current Rating): This is the maximum continuous current the device can handle.
- Curve B (Tripping Characteristic): This defines how much "surge" current the device allows before tripping.
- 3kA (Breaking Capacity): This measures the maximum "fault current" the device can safely interrupt without being destroyed.
Why use an MCB instead of an RCBO?
Many people choose an MCB because it is cheaper and smaller, it only protects the wires. It does not detect small leakages of electricity that can cause a fatal shock nor will it protect you from an electrical shock. In a modern fuse box, you would usually see an MCB paired with a separate RCD that provides the life-saving shock protection for a whole group of breakers. If you already have an RCD, you may choose to use just an MCB instead of buying an RCBO, which is an MCB and an RCD in one unit.
