This Eaton AFDD (Arc Fault Detection Device) is a sophisticated safety component designed to detect and disconnect dangerous electrical arcs that standard breakers (MCBs and RCDs) often miss.

While a standard breaker looks for a "flood" of electricity (an overload), an AFDD uses a microprocessor to "listen" to the electrical wave for the specific signature of a spark.

Breakdown of the Technical Specs:

  • ARC DETECTION: This is the core function. It identifies "micro-sparks" caused by damaged insulation, loose terminal screws, or crushed cables (e.g., a cable trapped under a carpet or chewed by a rodent).
  • 20A (Current Rating): This is the maximum continuous current the device can handle.
  • 10kA (Breaking Capacity): This measures the maximum "fault current" the device can safely interrupt without being destroyed.
  • Type A (AC + Pulsating DC):Detects AC leakage plus pulsating DC. Now the minimum standard for modern installations.

The Two Types of Arcs it Detects:

  1. Series Arcs: These happen along a single wire (e.g., a snapped copper strand inside a cable). Because the current hasnt increased, a normal fuse will not trip, but the spark can reach temperatures of 6,000°C, easily starting a fire.
  2. Parallel Arcs: These happen between two different wires (Live to Neutral). While a major short circuit trips an MCB, a "leakage" arc might be too small for a breaker to notice, but hot enough to ignite wood or insulation.

Why use an AFDD?

Statistics show that a large percentage of domestic fires are caused by faulty wiring in "hidden" places. Standard breakers are great at protecting your appliances, but the AFDD is specifically designed to prevent electrical fires caused by the wiring inside your walls.
